We just received some great shots of one of the weddings we did this past summer. Our bride Kara was the master DIY... She made all the labels for her Love themed candy buffet and even painstakingly made little pin wheels for the decor. All in all it came out beautifully. New Leaf Wedding Sneak Peak !

Yesterday we had the most amazing day, super sunny, semi-warm breeze, ok it was pretty cold... but the guest braved the weather to see our couple Shung and David tie the knot in the beautiful Linden Terrace of Fort Tryon Park. Their reception immediately followed at the New Leaf Cafe with cocktails in the main dining room and dinner and dancing in the tented area outside. By far one of the happiest groomsmen I have seen to date. They were so genuinely happy for their friend they spent the night singing sings, slinging jokes and by the end of the night propping each other up :). All in all it was a great day ! Below are some pics I was able to grab while we were running around, can't wait to see what Jeff of Jeffrey Lau Photo sends me.

Ayuda for the Arts Gala !

The 5th Annual Ayuda for the Arts Gala is coming up this November 9th, and I am super proud to be involved with such a great organization. Ayuda which stands for Alliance for Young Urban Design and the Arts is, to quote their mission statement "an alliance dedicated to helping students with a financial need, pursue their education in art related fields. We offer undergraduate scholarships and mentor ship to advance their studies in their chosen field of the arts."

I love that the scholarships are awarded to any art form, whether it be culinary arts, graphic art, fashion, music etc.. This years event " A Fashionable Taste of New York" will feature a delicious tastings from some of the finest restaurants in New York and beyond.

So I was sitting here planning this years family Halloween costume ( yes, I like for all of us to be a team theme, corny but I love it!) and I started to think about couples who take Halloween and make it a Wedding. Now normally I cringe at the thought but after doing a little research I found some pretty cool looks. Not what I would pick but hey if its what your into you might as well have fun with it.

In my most recent edition of Budget Travel there is a blink and you’ll miss it comparison chart between Trip Advisor and a new contender for travel reviews, Travel Post. I use Trip Advisor almost exclusively when planning a new vacation or business trip so I was happy to find a new review source that though not yet at the level of Trip Advisor lets you source reviews by the age, gender and budget of the author. This makes it easier to find reviews from like minded travelers. I especially find this useful when helping brides source nontraditional locations for their honeymoon. Haven’t you ever wondered who is behind the glowing or downright mean reviews? Though you can’t take all reviews literally, I think it really helps to know some demographic information about the person behind the writing.

Wedding Stamps

What do you think about these King and Queen stamps? I think Kiss the Groom was right, they do look too lovely to split up…

Not a big fan of these, I guess they get the point across, just not what I would pick.

Love these Red Heart Stamps but alas they are the old price so you would have to combine with one of the 2 or 1 cent stamps.

This is a pretty one but only if your invitations are heavy enough to warrant the increased price or if you truly don’t mind paying more than you have to for stamps.

I really like the Celebrate stamp as an option too.

Today’s Style section of the NY Times featured an article on a new way to invite friends and family to your wedding or social function.

Email !

Ok, not really new with the increased use of Facebook for invite management and of course Evite. But paperless post lets you custom design your invitation and not only send via email but also track your RSVP’s and allow you to buy or sell tickets to an event.

Here is a quote from the article,

“the way the hyper real envelope with the invitee’s name appears on the computer, how it reverses to the sender’s on the back, and then the pièce de résistance invitation pops out, so detailed you can see the paper’s grain. How intuitive it was to click on the RSVP and fill out the reply card. Zac Posen had used it for a benefit, as had some Diane Von Furstenberg folks, and the Young Friends of the Elie Wiesel Foundation were about to try it.”

Behind the Cost of Weddings Revisited

Two years ago I wrote a post called Behind the Cost of Weddings which explained some of the reasons weddings are expensive and what goes into the pricing of the vendors you hire. You can read that post here.

A recent conversation I had with a bride brought up a common misconception in regards to hiring wedding vendors and I wanted to expand a bit on that here since it wasn't covered in that first post. While we were discussing options for which band the couple was going to hire, the bride remarked that the price split evenly between the band members was a great salary for them to walk away with.

Please know that the price you are paying your wedding vendors is NOT their salary. The fee they are charging doesn't go directly into their pockets - it includes overhead (rent, utilities, business licenses, equipment, postage, etc), taxes, employee salaries and benefits as well as other costs of running a business. So, for example, if your photographer is charging $7000 to document your wedding, that total amount is not going into their personal account. Their full fee is not their full paycheck - not even close.

So many beautiful things to see at this weeks Pop Up Wedding Chapel ! One of my favorites so far were the icons of faith votive. Unfortunately I didn't get a picture of the Pink Patent leather Bible cover which was equally awesome but I did find a picture of the votive. Unfortunately Rock of Ages doesn't have a site up that you can purchase from but it is coming soon ! (I hope) Oh and I love the purple packaging !

Tipping Guide: The Short Version

Who gets a tip?, When do they get a tip?, Who doesn't get a tip ? The list of answers can be long and varied. Here is the short version on who you should and should not tip on the big day.

Yes !

Caterers: Though most venues/caterers include a 18% - 22% service charge thus excluding you from additional tipping, if your guest seem really happy with the service an extra tip for each table is not unheard of.

Bartenders: 10% ( of total bar cost, and should be shared if more than one bartender)

Coat/Bathroom/Valet Attendants: $1 to $2 per guests

Transportation: Only if it is not included on the bill, 15%

DJ/Musicians : 15% for DJ's, $25 to $45 per musician

Hair/Makeup Stylist: Same as you would any other time you have your hair or makeup done, 15% to 20%

Maybe ?

Photographers: They should not expect it, but if your really happy with their service, I suggest sending it after you review your images.

Rental Company: Not mandatory but a nice gesture if you want them to work extra hard to load/unload as quickly as possible.

Seamstress/Fitter: Only if you really feel they have gone above and beyond

Wedding Planners: 10% is customary, but not expected or required.

When !

Before or after is fine. Checks or Cash are best. And designate someone to take this task on for you ! If not your planner someone you trust, label all envelopes and provide extra cash just in case you forgot someone.

Everyone knows that I love a pretty bow like no ones business, so I was extra excited when I saw Handle & Spout profiled on Brooklyn Chapel. Their selection is small but if your looking for a fun accent for your bridesmaids or a fun accent for yourself check out their selection.

Tastes : from meatpacking district through chelsea

This past weekend was the Tastes event presented by the NYC LAB School at Gansevoort Plaza. The event is a fundraiser for the school and included some of the cities finest restaurants.

The list included:

5 Ninth, Amy's Bread, Barocco Café, Billy's Bakery, Bombay Talkie, Buddakan, Cookshop, The Green Table, Il Bordello, Klee Brasserie, Knickerbocker Bar & Grill, La Bottega, Le Gamin Mobi, Macelleria, Matsuri, Ono in Hotel Gansevoort, Pastis, The Red Cat, Rocking Horse Cafe, Smorgas Chef, Son Cubano, Spice Market, Tia Pol,Trestle on Tenth and Zamp

The sun was shining, the menu was varied and the music was amazing! Some of the dishes I sampled were the Mini Maine Lobster Rolls by Klee Brasserie, The Barbecued Pulled Pork Sandwiches with Homemade Pickles by The Red Cat ( which were delicious !) and the Tandoori Shrimp with Dates and Papdi Chaat by the Bombay Talkie. But my ultimate favorite was the Ropa Vieja with White Rice and Sweet Plantains by Son Cubano.

Montego Bay Wedding

Recently we went the Grand Palladium Resort in Montego Bay, Jamaica. During our week stay I think there were about 4 to 5 a day ! Of course because of the recent swine flu scare a lot of these weddings were originally scheduled for Mexico. I would like to personally vouch for the amazing food. The resort has an adjoining resort ( Lady Hamilton ) which gives you a range of 6 plus restaurants and 13 bars. Usually I prefer a close and intimate type of Destination Wedding but this resort had something for everyone.

A few weekends ago, my husband and i decided to try one of the new restaurants under the west side highway in Harlem. Covo Lounge is one of three new spots to open on 12th avenue and 137th street. Where you say? Totally hidden from any kind of pedestrian traffic it is literally on a dead end street a little ways down from the Harlem outpost of Fairway.

Covo sits between Body Restaurant and Lounge (sultry Miami Beach decor) and Talay ( Thai - Latin fusion) on a stretch of road that is perfectly timed for Columbia's expansion.

The food was good ( not great) standard American-Italian fare and mid priced.
What really made this place for me was the ambiance. Rustic decor with an open kitchen in the back made it a pleasurable experience. the crowd was more mature than one would awesome in that area but the service was quick, the staff super friendly and the wine list had everything I liked.

So my husband is always telling me I should be a critique....mostly because I look at EVERYTHING and always have something to say. So I am going to try to write a review for everywhere I go ( or at least try to) from now until the end of the summer. Something like a personal experiment crossed with a seemingly self involved notion that someone will care about what I have to say ( I mean I look up every possible review for everything from restaurants to hotels before I make a decision, client feedback is really important to me). Though I love parties and weddings in particular there are so many things that interest me. In this day and current economic climate I think it is important to keep your options open. So many times traditional wedding venues can be replaced with nice and spacious restaurants or event spaces where you can truly have a unique experience.

Not sure what I will review first, but be on the lookout.

One of the new hotels opening is the Shangri-la hotel which features a 61,000 sq feet spa ! Talk about space to relax !

So I am officially back and 2 days early ! Though all this snow leaves me with the strong desire to curl up under the covers, instead I am already dreaming of all the places I want to visit in this new year.

Today's New York Times Travel edition lists the 44 places to go in 2009. And what is number 1?

Beirut !

Now I know you must be thinking the same thing I did, um hello impending war in the region ? But NYT announces Beirut is poised to reclaim its title of the Paris of the Middle East. Two luxury hotels are penned to open this year a Four Seasons Hotel Beirut ( the epitome of luxury and comfort ) and Le Grey ( from the people behind One Aldwych in London also one of the classiest hotels in London).

Since I love to travel and I love weddings here are my picks for honeymoon worthy picks from 2-44 of the NYT list.

1- ( #3) The Galapagos : Not only is this an eco-friendly destination, but this year (2009) marks the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Darwin and the 150th anniversary of " The Origin of Species" , the book that was inspired by his travels in the region. Check out the Red Mangrove Isabela Lodge which is right on the beach and small enough to maintain your privacy.

2- ( #6) Fjallnas-Sweden : not every honeymoon destination has to be on a beach. If your up for adventure try the fjallnas reserve a 19th century resort in the Swedish hinterlands. They feature tundra-chic suites ( not quite sure what that means but it sounds fun) on a $1,700 acre complex.

Beverly was beyond fantastic. She absolutely thought of everything both during the wedding planning and on our wedding day. She was the only person who cared as much about my wedding as I did. She was interested in the details and made sure that all of my wishes were carried out. I asked her to improvise on a few of the ceremony and reception elements and she performed beyond my expectations. When I walked into both the ceremony and reception, I was amazed by her beautiful, personal touches. I truly could not have had a better experience. This weekend I was asked more than twice about which fork to use for which meal or what each glass on the table meant. So I thought it was the perfect opportunity to blog a little recap about basic to formal table settings and some suggested tips you can use to remember which fork is for your salad and which knife is for your butter !

Less the etiquette police track you down and fine you :)

Basic:

Tip: "Holding your hands in front of you, touch the tips of your thumbs to the tips of your forefingers to make a lower case ‘b’ with your left hand and a lower case ‘d’ with your right hand. This reminds you that ‘bread and butter’ go to the left of the place setting and ‘drinks’ go on the right."

(Now this could make you look really silly but once you get the hang of it you won't have to create your own puppet show at the dinner table.)

“FORKS” The order, left to right is: F for Fork, O for Plate (the shape!), K for Knives and S for Spoons.

Knife blades always face the plate
The napkin goes to the left of the fork, or on the plate
The bread and butter plate and knife are optional

Informal:

The picture shows a table setting for the following courses: Soup course, Salad or first course, Entrée, Dessert

Now informal has a lot of components and I encourage you to see the full description (here).
But for a quick what do I do with all these utensils scan the below.

Dinner Plate: In the middle under the napkin

Forks: 2 of them. One large for your entree one smaller for salad or appetizer. In an outside in order, so if you are using the salad fork first it will be on the "outside" next to the dinner fork. If the salad is served after the main course then it will be on the "inside" next to your plate.

Napkin: If it is not folded then it should go placed in a napkin ring either to the left of the forks or in the middle of the plate.

Dinner knife: Top the immediate right ( cutting edge facing inward).
Never place a dirty knife on the table, place mat or tablecloth !!!

Spoons: To the right of the knife. Same concept as the Forks outside-in. The picture shows soup being served first so the spoon is on the outside of the plate. Dessert spoon will be on the inside immediately next to the plate.

Glasses: Are always placed at the top right of the dinner plate.

Salad plate: Is placed to the left of the forks.

Bread plate with butter knife: Above the forks with the butter knife placed diagonally across the edge blade facing down.

Coffee cup and saucer: If serving is placed above and to the right of the knife and spoons.

Formal:

Illustration is set for Appetizer: Shellfish, First Course: Soup or fruit , Fish Course , Entrée, Salad

The most complicated of them all !

Some of the basic differences are:

Service Plate: This large plate, also called a charger, serves as an under plate for the plate holding the first course, which will be brought to the table. When the first course is cleared, the service plate remains until the plate holding the entrée is served, at which point the two plates are exchanged. The charger may serve as the under plate for several courses which precede the entrée.

Oyster fork: If shellfish are to be served, the oyster fork is set to the right of the spoons. Note: It is the only fork ever placed on the right of the plate.

Glasses: These can number up to five and are placed so that the smaller ones are in front. The water goblet is placed directly above the knives. Just to the right goes a champagne flute; In front of these are placed a red and/or white wine glass and a sherry glass.

No more than three of any implement is ever placed on the table, except when an oyster fork is used in addition to three other forks. If more than three courses are served before dessert, then the utensil for the fourth course is brought in with the food; likewise the salad fork and knife may be brought in when the salad course is served.

Dessert spoons and forks are brought in on the dessert plate just before dessert is served.

At the below mentioned resort I had the misfortune to spy a young beautiful bride drenched in sweat due to her traditional ball gown for a beach ceremony. Unfortunate and horrible for pictures this could have been easily avoided. This inspired me to find some cute and cost effective alternatives for a beach or casual wedding. I also think these would be great as second dresses since they are light and fun.

So I just got back from celebrating my wedding anniversary at one of the best resorts in Punta Cana "Paradisus Palma Real". The resort is relatively new officially opening in the Spring of 2006. And though I went on a strictly pleasure trip I highly recommend it for a destination wedding. The grounds are immaculate, the staff highly trained and the location beautiful. The grounds even have their own mall !! Where you can get last minute essentials, gifts, liquor etc... (this is in addition to the resort shop which is fully stocked).

Ever been on emitations.com? Let me start by saying that they have the best selection of bootleg jewelry on the net ( and I mean bootleg in the nicest way possible :) ). Not only do they have celebrity knockoffs but they are affordable too! I especially like these small flower earrings for bridesmaids or flower girls.

These I found on Etsy and Whiteaisle also great sights for weddings finds.

Dinner Parties, Weddings, Babies... My favorite flower

Aren't they pretty ? Peonies definitely rank up there in my top 5. The best part is that it is the kind of flower that can be used in any arrangement whether it be for a wedding or a small dinner party of 6. Though not always available due to seasonal restrictions ( Usually in late Spring early Summer) they are known to represent the "flower of riches and honour" in certain cultures which not only makes it quite auspicious for weddings but gives you something to chat about with your guest as you gather round the dinner table. When it was time for me to pick flowers I definitely had a hard time. First I was consumed with the need for something different. Second, I had to stick to a specific budget.
So my quest began. I made appointments with the some of the highly praised florists on the knot and went from there. Every florist I went to showed me the same pictures of the same tall, short, bland, boring centerpieces ( in my price range of course ;) ). But I had a specific idea in mind and I would not be deterred !

So I started making appointments at my neighborhood florists to see what really was the big difference. And I learned several things:

1) There really is a difference in the level of service ! Whereas the $$$ florist wined and dined you ( literally) upon your first visit ( I got offered staring at assorted imported cheeses to wine tastings !) The $ florist had a no frills this is what we do attitude. Here is a book, here is a chair, lets us know when you find what you like.

2) Though the price of a particular flower has a lot to do with the part of the world it is cultivated in ( a rose is not simply just a rose, I worked in the rose garden at the Botanical Gardens so I can tell the difference most times). Simple arrangements went for drastically different prices. This I found the most disenheartening but...

3) I noticed the pricey florist are much more open to new ideas. Though I did find that with a few gentle suggestions you could get them where you needed them to be\ without too much heartache.

Later I am going to review Designs By Rose....

The Riverside Church

Ahh the church. The best part of the whole wedding and the reason you got involved in this adventure to begin with ( the vows).

The Riverside Church is an interdenominational (American Baptist and United Church of Christ), interracial, international church in New York City, famous not only for its elaborate Gothic architecture — which includes the world's largest carillon — but also as a center for the promotion of progressive causes. It is situated in Morningside Heights between Riverside Drive and Claremont Avenue and between 120th Street and 122nd Street. The tallest church in the United States and the 26th tallest in the world, it was described by The New York Times in 2008 as "a stronghold of activism and political debate throughout its 75-year history...influential on the nation’s religious and political landscapes".

There are 3 chapel options:

The main space called the Nave is styled in the tradition of Chartres Cathedral and was built in both France and the United States. Measuring 96 feet in length and 64 feet in width it has a capacity of approximately 1,900.

The Second option is called The Christ Chapel. The chapel is patterned after the eleventh century Romanesque nave of the fortress church of St. Nazaire at Carcassonne. This one seats about 145 to 150

There is also a much smaller third chapel which seats 15 called the Meditation Chapel.

It is also one of the only churches that has its own event space (that doesn't look like the elementary school gym) and exclusive caterer ( madeline catering). Many options are available for party rooms depending on the number of guest and whether or not you will be having a cocktail hour. My personal experience with this site was wonderful. I was able to order custom chairs/linens etc. from the caterer directly and the couple in charge was super attentive and extremely helpful.

The wedding coordinator on the other hand could be hard to reach sometimes ( she also coordinates religious services for the church) and wasn't all hearts and flowers if you get what I mean. She definitely wasn't mean, but she didn't give the gushing emotion most brides start to take for granted after booking the gazillionth vendor. .

They also include an organist and a reverend if you do not have your own.

One of the best weddings of the century !!! Ok, OK it was my wedding... but it was beautiful if I don't say so myself. Here is a teaser pic, I will be writing full reviews in the next couple of weeks. Overall I had a wonderful experience will all of my vendors because I was meticulous about selecting quality, affordability and most importantly client following. In the hopes of giving you all the ups and downs I will mark the reviews with a ** if there are additional negative comments I think a prospective client should hear.

One of the cutest web sights I have seen for out of the ordinary party accessories is Plum Party.

Depending on your theme or lack thereof, you can find basic linens in really pretty opal colors or out of the ordinary maracas for a festive backyard party or Mexican themed kids birthday. Even a fun wedding favor ! My favorite invite? The oh so yummy bubble gum shower invitation. Several different versions allow all types of options for different types of events. They also have plenty of boxed invitations with little Knights and Princess !

Heart Stamps !

Stamps are an important element on your wedding invitations. Imagine receiving a beautiful calligraphic invitation with this as your stamp. Now unless you are having a Star Wars themed wedding (which do happen) this doesn't necessarily set the tone for your special day. I know that a lot of brides use the traditional USPS love stamps like these. But now there are so many options to customize your own special vision.

Sites such as Zazzle and Photo let customize your stamps to match your invitation perfectly.

Paper, Paper Paper !!!

I *heart* paper. Like a lot. I love all the pretty options. Colors, textures, shapes, sizes. Needless to say, wedding invitations were really hard for me. If it wasn't because I almost gave myself an ulcer making my engagement party invitations I totally would have made them myself. That and my pc crashed ( the pc gods have not been shining on me lately). So I went on a search for the "perfect" invitation. Now if I had all the money in the world I would have indulged my inner designer and lept head first into letter press. Alas I had to compromise and ended up customizing one of the selections offered by Wiley Valentine. My stationary needs were fulfilled at Bloomingdale's! Funny I would have never known, but they have a small stationary section run by Judy Paulen Designs. Though I stalked the invitation selection at various retailers for months, I always ended up there. Will definitely post picture when they come in!

Kates Paperie had great selections for the traditional bride, a bit pushy service for someone who is still in the "I'm just looking phase", Papyrus would have been nice but I found all their stores to be so small. Wedding Things had a really fun selection plus tons of favor ideas, trinkets, bridesmaid gifts and accessories all in store ( the web has an overwhelming array of options as well).

Let me demystify what all the different printing methods mean. The slightest difference can make or break the bank. Definitions courtesy of Wikipedia =)

Letterpress: is a term for printing text with movable type, in which the raised surface of the type is inked and then pressed against a smooth substance to obtain an image in reverse.

See how the print looks like it is indented in the paper. This process looks best on heavy stock paper, so the images are more defined. * Think of it as the the BMW of invitations, Lux but semi-affordable, depending on the whether you go for the SUV or the compact*

Thermography Printing: post print process done immediately after printing. It can be done inline or offline as long as the ink is wet. Thermography powder is applied to the sheet of paper after it leaves the printing press. The sheet is then vacuumed or shaken to remove excess powder. This leaves powder only where there is wet ink. The sheet then travels through a heat tunnel; there the heat causes the powder to melt which leaves a raised effect. * Thermography falls somewhere in the middle, I found printers who could provide the printing at really affordable prices if given the artwork, and other ready made stationers that combined engraving and thermography which could really get up there*

Flat or Laser Printing: Is a common type of printing that rapidly produces high quality text and graphics on plain paper. Like photocopiers, laser printers employ a xerographic printing process but differ from analog photocopiers in that the image is produced by the direct scanning of a laser beam across the printer's photoreceptor. In plain English this process is like printing on your computer at home, only difference is that printers can produce really vivid images and graphics in mass quantities. *Really Affordable*

Engraved: The plate ( burin) is inked all over, and then the ink wiped off the surface, leaving only the ink in the engraved lines. The plate is then put through a high-pressure printing-press together with a sheet of paper (often moistened to soften it). The paper picks up the ink from the engraved lines, making a print. The process can be repeated many times; typically several hundred impressions (copies) could be printed before the plate shows much sign of wear. The work on the plate can also be added to by repeating the whole process; this creates an engraving which exists in more than one state.

Somewhere in the middle, again one of those depends on your design selections*
